In 1967, when David Lynch was 21, the actor, filmmaker, painter, and musician did something out of the ordinary: he conceived a “moving painting” titled Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times), which blended painting with video projection. That early rejection of fixed categories would remain central to his practice. “I found the world completely and totally fantastic as a child,” Lynch said. “Of course, I had the usual fears, like going to school … for me, back then, school was a crime against young people. It destroyed the seeds of liberty.” Lynch would go on to pursue that sense of liberty across multiple creative disciplines, including painting, sculpture, watercolor, film, and photography. At Pace Gallery in Berlin, work spanning the entirety of his artistic career is on view, ahead of a major Lynch exhibition later this year in Los Angeles. —Elena Clavarino
