Four performances this spring pay homage to the immortal August Bournonville (1805–1879), the Danish choreographer who believed that ballet was “an important factor in the spiritual development of [a] nation,” and who nurtured Denmark’s national style of classical dance. Bournonville’s ballets are warm, witty, and wise, wreathed in the feeling, to borrow a line from the poet Robert Browning, that “God’s in his heaven—all’s right with the world.” Bournonville dancing is fleet and articulate, with quick precise footwork, a lofty ballon, and beautifully rounded épaulement. This program begins with a documentary film about the great creator, and then follows with excerpts of his ballets. It’s a wonderful introduction to, or refresher course on, the man and his distinctive form of classicism. —Laura Jacobs
