“Everyone has something that drives them through life,” the multimedia artist Daniel Spoerri once said. “Being without a native land is the engine of my own.” He was born Daniel Feinstein in Romania, in 1930, but cut ties with his native country at 12, after his father was murdered in a Romanian pogrom. Since then, Spoerri has lived nomadically, drifting from place to place—Zurich, Paris, New York, Symi, Düsseldorf, Munich, Tuscany, and more. Over his travels, differing tastes and social interactions touched him, and he’s expressed his perceptions in many media. One of Spoerri’s recurring subjects is food—using a special spray he makes art from leftovers. Here in Vienna, work from six decades of his career is on display. Assemblages and collages, scripts, textiles, and his beguiling bronze sculptures are a testament to his chameleon nature. —E.C.
