“Why is this RSC reinvention of Edmond Rostand’s much-revived 1897 play so unusually enchanting?” asks the critic Dominic Maxwell in the Times, referring to a new production directed by Simon Evans. “Even after its constantly entertaining almost three hours are up,” Maxwell continues, “you can have fun poring over the prose, poetry and performance you have just seen to figure out what casts the greatest spell.” Having earned glowing reviews thus far, this revival’s success is in large part attributed to Adrian Lester’s performance in the title role. Surrounding him are Levi Brown as Christian, the handsome but superficial suitor vying for the heart of Roxanne, played by Susannah Fielding. Co-adapted by Evans and Debris Stevenson, the show stays largely faithful to Rostand’s timeless classic. —Jeanne Malle
