In the late–19th century, the Russian philosopher Nikolai Fedorov planted the seeds for a movement that would change the country. He believed that technological advancements would one day grant human beings immortality, and that the deceased would be resurrected. He went further. According to his writings, Earth’s overpopulation would drive humans to colonize outer space. Fedorov’s ideas soon reached writers and artists—Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Vasily Chekrygin—before being quashed by Stalin in the 1930s. This exhibition explores Cosmism through work from the Khardzhiev collection. Though much of the art was created in the early 20th century, it feels decidedly contemporary. —Elena Clavarino
