Haven’t we all wished “to take off, to drift, [to reach] a state of weightlessness, a suspension?” Isn’t that why dreams of flying are so marvelous? The choreographer Rachid Ouramdane, quoted above, has based his theater on the universal human desire to defy gravity. Virtuosity and vertigo go hand in hand in this performance by eight acrobats and two practitioners of extreme sports—a highliner and a climber. As much as possible, the work lives between the sky and the earth. These performances are part of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels: A Festival. —Laura Jacobs
