Born in 1827, the American silversmith Edward C. Moore spent most of his career on an exclusive contract with Tiffany & Co., a new business at the time. Indeed, his work with the jewelry company led to its explosive success in the second half of the 19th century. Over the decades, Moore formed a collection of decorative arts, with objects ranging from Greek and Roman glass to Japanese baskets and Islamic metalwork. This exhibition presents more than 180 pieces from that collection, which Moore donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with 70 Tiffany & Co. silver objects created under Moore’s direction. “Collecting Inspiration” demonstrates Moore’s impact on the Tiffany brand and on the larger history of American metalwork. —Jeanne Malle
