Cindy Sherman once said, “When I look at the pictures, I never see myself; they aren’t self-portraits. Sometimes I disappear.” This has never been truer than in her most recent series of works, now on display at Hauser & Wirth’s Wooster Street gallery. In a departure from her more classical approach to portraiture, Sherman has used digital collaging to graft mismatched facial features into unsettling, almost Boschian visages. The series is pure Sherman in the way it forces us to question the structure of identity. —Lucy Horowitz
