Cézanne: In and Out of Time

Nov 11, 2020 – Feb 28, 2021
465 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA 02115, USA

The Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne once said, “When I judge art, I take my painting and put it next to a God made object like a tree or flower. If it clashes, it is not art.” Cézanne was a contemporary of the Impressionists, but he became increasingly isolated with age, so fixated on realizing his unique theories of color and light that he hardly put his brush down. Placing 12 Cézannes among works by Degas, Pissarro, Renoir, and others, this exhibition investigates the ways in which Cézanne was influenced by Impressionism’s stress on spontaneity, while addressing his move into a more radical realm of form, weight, and space. —C.J.F.
