If there’s a hidden agenda in Carnegie Hall’s opening-night program, the secret is safe with us. Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who juggles the music directorships of the Metropolitan Opera and The Philadelphia Orchestra with other ongoing commitments, rendezvouses with his band from out of town at Seventh Avenue and 57th Street for music sure to thrill. The playlist opens with Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, said to honor frontline workers and the human spirit’s resilience in the time of the pandemic. Next up is Rachmaninoff’s surging Piano Concerto No. 2, showcasing the galvanic Yuja Wang. Then, to cleanse the palate, comes Jeder Baum spricht (“Every tree speaks”), purportedly a meditation on climate change inspired by Beethoven’s love of nature; the composer is the Iranian-Canadian Iman Habibi, whose extensive catalogue of microscopic bits and pieces has come in for some staggering praise.
