The arch Romantic E. T. A. Hoffmann wrote a lot of stories. Das Fräulein von Scuderi (Mademoiselle de Scudéri) is one of many works of fiction that might have found a place in Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann but didn’t. So much the better for Paul Hindemith, whose opera tells of a goldsmith in Paris (Tomasz Konieczny) who cannot bear to be parted from his creations. That’s too bad for his customers, not all of whom make it to the final curtain. Shades of Sweeney Todd, minus the meat pies and the motive of revenge. —Matthew Gurewitsch
