Caravaggio & Bernini

Oct 15, 2019 – Jan 9, 2020
Maria-Theresien-Platz, 1010 Wien, Austria

According to the renowned art historian André Berne-Joffroy, “What begins in the work of Caravaggio is, quite simply, modern painting.” We see that now, but in his time it was Baroque painting—raw feeling dramatized, the sacred and profane intertwined—that began with Caravaggio. A generation later, sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini followed in the giant’s footsteps. In the biggest Baroque exhibition Austria has ever seen, the Kunsthistorisches celebrates Caravaggio and Bernini’s revolution. —E.C.
