Antonio Canova (1757–1822) captured the melodramatic nature of the Baroque period and the cold artificiality of the Classical in sculptures that are both solemn and monumental. Before he chiseled his final creations in marble, he created practice models in clay, which were sometimes as detailed and striking as the final work. Forty of 60 surviving clay models are the subject of this exhibition. Some are hastily done, others are more elaborate, but all provide a window into the artist’s working process. —Elena Clavarino
