The origins of the camera can be traced back to 1816, when a Frenchman named Joseph Nicéphore Niépce created images on paper coated with silver chloride. In 1829, he entered into a partnership with Louis Daguerre, and, well, the photographic portrait was born. This exhibition adds Black studio photographers into the history of the medium, bringing to light these pioneers, their techniques, and the ways in which their work contributed to art photography. The show features 150 images from the 19th century to the present, and includes famous portrait photographers James Van Der Zee, James Presley Ball, and Addison Sherlock. —Elena Clavarino
