The director David Lynch was eloquent about his love affair with Los Angeles. “Even with smog, there’s something about that light that’s not harsh, but bright and smooth,” he wrote in his book Catching the Big Fish. “It fills me with the feeling that all possibilities are available.” Others shared that sentiment. In the 1960s and 70s, a group of artists consolidated a movement at the intersection of science, art, and technology—they called it “Light and Space.” A new exhibition presents their 21st-century successors: L.A. artists dedicated to catching the city’s humble beauty, neighborhoods, and magic hour. Featured artists include Catherine Opie and Noah Davis, but all are in love with the city. —Maggie Turner
