Historically, the Middle East and North Africa have been regions of rapid innovation riddled with political and social tension. In an exhibition that covers issues such as immigration, emigration, and the region’s colonial histories, artists use mixed media to tell thought-provoking stories. Kader Attia, for example, has sculpted an Algerian city out of couscous, placing photographs of architects Le Corbusier and Fernand Pouillon in the background. Attia is drawing attention to the design inspiration these men took from Mozabite architecture—without acknowledgement. —E.C.
