“Well it ain’t no secret, I’ve been around a time or two,” belts Bruce Springsteen in his 1987 hit “Tougher Than the Rest.” He was singing to an unnamed girlfriend, but his lyrics—and the song’s title—aptly forecasted his recent decade of touring, which has yet to yield even as he’s drawn closer to his 74th birthday and 50th year on the rock scene. The Boss has outlasted all others, somehow maintaining the forcefulness, vigor, and fire that catapulted him to stardom. His current shows are far from the nostalgic, “commemorative” performances of many similarly-tenured stars, instead delivering a potency familiar to Springsteen fans of any era. The Springsteen and E Street Band 2023 Tour kicked off in Florida last February, and after hitting over 20 cities in Europe, has returned to North America to finish up its final months. Springsteen, Steve van Zandt, and company return to their native New Jersey for shows on August 30, September 1, and September 3. —Jack Sullivan
