The artist Bruce Munro was born and raised in London, and studied art there. In his early 20s, he moved to Australia for a working holiday and was told that he had a “butterfly mind.” Munro realized his approach was too scattered, unsettled. He narrowed his focus to a single subject—light. Since the 1980s, Munro has been exploring the phenomenon of light in huge, mesmerizing installations that sometimes incorporate thousands of elements. In 2009, for example, he filled an entire vineyard in California, at Paso Robles, with plastic baubles that lit up the ground in the dark. At the secluded Heide Museum, he’s doing it again, with outdoor works that tell intimate stories. —Elena Clavarino
