In 2016, the artistic director of MASP, Adriano Pedrosa, started a new series of exhibitions called “Historiàs,” which brought the somewhat provincial museum into the limelight. Every year since then, a new edition has analyzed a particular aspect of the country’s history, focusing on sharp topics—feminism, sexuality, dance, rebellion. This year’s edition meant to do the same, with works ranging from the 16th to 21st centuries and pulled from different regions and periods of the country’s history. But it got off to a rocky start. A set of six photographs—they depicted rural communities during a period of Marxist land reform in the 1980s—were left out of the show because of a missed deadline, causing uproar and talk of censorship. Months later, things have quieted down and the show is a must see. —Elena Clavarino
