With a background in the fashion world, the sculptor Patricia Ayres is especially attuned to the ways the figure is manipulated by fabric. The twelve sculptures in this exhibition are “bodies” made of stacked foam padding bound with military elastic and metal hardware. Some are more than seven feet tall. Ayres has said that the two most powerful forces hindering people today are incarceration and the Catholic Church, and she makes this notion visceral in shapes trussed and buckling under the tension of elastic cords. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition at Matthew Brown. —J.D.
