Black No More

Jan 18 – Feb 27, 2022
480 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036, United States

In George S. Schuyler’s 1931 novel, Black No More, race is a commodity. Set during the Harlem Renaissance, satirizing both the Klu Klux Klan and the N.A.A.C.P, the book is about a Black scientist who invents a technology that can make Black Americans white. After a romantic bid is shunned by a white woman at a speakeasy, Max Disher, a young black man in New York City, opts for the procedure. He becomes Matthew Fisher and moves to Atlanta. The beloved book has now been adapted for the stage by John Ridley, who won an Oscar for his 12 Years a Slave screenplay. The show features music by the rapper Tariq Trotter and choreography by Bill T. Jones (who won a Tony for Spring Awakening’s choreography), and the cast includes many Broadway veterans, from Brandon Victor Dixon, who stars as Max, to Lillias White. —Jensen Davis
