“Does the environment approach us through our senses,” asks the artist Björg Eiríksdóttir, “or do we reach out for it?” Eiríksdóttir is fascinated by the complex relationship between human bodies and nature. She uses the word “polyphony” to describe the layers of consciousness she expresses in her paintings, which contain structures reminiscent of the branches in a tree. She imagines those structures inside us, interweaving and interlocking to create our egos and our identities. —E.C.
