“I make a picture in the same way a child does,” says the painter, musician, and writer Billy Childish, “something ‘out there’ interests me. Making a painting of that ‘something’ then joins me with the universal creator/creation in a more intent way than just being an observer.” The visceral quality of Childish’s landscapes do have the directness of a child. In fact, he paints fast, sometimes finishing a work in a single session. Resonant with energy, the paintings in this exhibition range from landscapes to river scenes, and include images of the Pacific Northwest, where Childish and his band Three Headcoats used to play. —Elena Clavarino
