Horror fiction is ubiquitous, but you’ve got to come to New York to see horror postmodern dance. No one does it better than Beth Gill. Zombies and vampires do not figure in her absorbing dances, nor even do stories. But the 44-year-old choreographer understands that as long as there are bodies involved, horror can gain purchase. Gill is expert at engendering an unnerving identification between players and audience, and a suspicion among us viewers that we are complicit in rules—of how a dance unfolds or a society punishes—that we don’t entirely understand. This latest piece is dubbed Nail Biter. Believe it. —Apollinaire Scherr
