In Federico García Lorca’s 1945 play The House of Bernarda Alba, a mother forces her five daughters to stay home for eight years to mourn the death of her second husband. Loosely inspired by Lorca, Diane Exavier’s new play sees the five Abellard sisters returning home to mother—during a scorching Flatbush summer—to mourn the death of their father. As they contend with the loss, they watch their Haitian neighborhood gentrify, knowing it will quickly become unrecognizable. The play debuted as an audio-only production in 2022, and now has its first live staging at the Pershing Square Signature Center. —Jensen Davis
