The Berlin Palace, once an exemplar of Baroque architecture north of the Alps, has been transformed into a monumental museum complex called the Humboldt Forum, named for the Prussian brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt, born respectively in 1767 and 1769. After two years of delays, the 680-million-euro project has finally opened its doors and ambitiously expects to host over 1,000 annual events. Six exhibitions are now on view throughout the space. Noteworthy is “Berlin Global,” an interactive permanent display. The show walks viewers through the city’s history, covering fashion, war, and entertainment, as well as Berlin’s relationship with the rest of the world. Included is a display devoted to the Humboldt brothers, avid explorers who were deeply versed in philosophy, linguistics, and science. —E.C.
