In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, George Wickham is the charming, cunning flirt who preys on innocence—first Mr. Darcy’s younger sister and then Elizabeth Bennet’s. At the 11th hour, Darcy forces Wickham to marry the young Bennet girl, thus saving the family from disgrace. In Being Mr. Wickham, playwrights Adrian Lukis and Catherine Curzon revisit Wickham 30 years after the events of Austen’s novel. Set on the eve of his 60th birthday, the rake recounts the drama that unfolded in Pride and Prejudice, but from his perspective. Lukis, who starred as Wickham in the BBC’s beloved 1995 adaptation of the novel, once again steps into the role. —Jensen Davis
