Most seasons, there are plenty of complete cycles of the nine Beethoven symphonies to choose from, but now that we’re celebrating the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth, there’s really no end of them. Sir John and his stirring band, with its tangy period timbres, have traveled this road before, to splendid effect. It’s inconceivable that they’d disappoint this time round, and the Barcelona hall with its Catalan modernista interior (visualize a colossal Tiffany lampshade) is a wonder—acoustically, too. —M.G.
