Beautiful Monsters in Early European Prints and Drawings

July 18 – Nov 15, 2020
380 Sussex Dr, Ottawa, ON K1N 9N4, Canada

Be it terror or wonder, the supernatural is always cause for excitement. When it comes from the hands of master artists, these monsters of the mind are not only beautiful, they speak to the social preoccupations and power dynamics of the time. Spanning Renaissance and Baroque styles, an exhibition pulled from the gallery’s collection tells the story of early modern Europe through the demons portrayed on 15th- to 17th-century engravings, etchings, woodcuts, and drawings. Highlights include Albrecht Dürer’s The Beast With Lamb’s Horns, Hendrick Goltzius’s The Dragon Devouring the Companions of Cadmus, and Andrea Mantegna’s Battle of the Sea Gods. —J.V.
