Ballet Black on Film: Depouillement

Elegant and enigmatic, Depouillement, a 2009 ballet by the English choreographer Will Tuckett, is both rich and spare, its unities and symmetries shifting between six dancers in fascinating ways. Tuckett doesn’t feel compelled to stress and strain classical vocabulary, as so many of today’s choreographers feel they must do, but uses it to play and wander, as if finding a midsummer twilight in Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello. The dancers move with great clarity and the lightest touch. —L.J.
