Bad Kreyòl

Dominique Morisseau, who completes her Signature residency with Bad Kreyòl.

480 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036, United States

“There is an urgent need for Haitian voices to be heard,” says Dominique Morisseau, “and for people to see the Haitian experience for all the multitudes it contains.” Her new play, Bad Kreyòl, was inspired by a trip she took to Haiti, her father’s home country, several years ago. Her protagonist Simone, like Morisseau, is a first-generation Haitian American. To fulfill her grandmother’s dying wish, she heads to Haiti to form a relationship with her cousin Gigi. When Simone gets there, she is forced to confront the clash between her Americanized views and the realities of the changing country. “Theater provides opportunities for connection,” Morisseau says, “and if ever there were a national need to find connections to the real and delicately complex lives of Haitians, that time is now.” Tiffany Nichole Greene directs. —Jeanne Malle
