The Romanian artist Avigdor Arikha, who died in 2010, was still a boy when he was deported to a Ukranian concentration camp during W.W. II. He survived thanks to his drawings, which were shown to visiting Red Cross delegates. After the war Arikha established himself as an abstract painter, but in 1965 he began to draw—powerfully—from life, and left abstraction behind. The Benaki exhibition, the first on Arikha in Greece, featuries over 50 works by the late artist. It takes its title from words Arikha once wrote: “Art is breath. It comes through breath. It dwells in breath.” —J.V.
