“I try to imagine a world where there is no racism and no domination,” says the Senegalese artist Omar Ba of his multimedia canvases, “where we can find all the dreams we don’t have now.” Ba and 24 other featured artists in this group show at Mumok are actively decolonizing the avante-garde by addressing themes of freedom, identity, and colonial oppression through their work—revising the Western-centric discourse on this significant artistic phenomenon. With its contributors hailing from South Asia, Africa, Europe, and America, the show offers a glimpse into global modernism and its complex tangle of liberation movements, both old and new. —Nyla Gilstrap
