Art Basel flourishes in the small Swiss town that is its namesake, but it also has outposts around the world. Twenty-three years ago, in 2002, it opened a Miami edition. Three years later, when Design Miami opened in 2005, the Miami edition of Basel had become as fun as it was famous. Store openings, cocktail parties, and raves line the beach, where attendees range from Kim Kardashian to 50 Cent. Large-scale installations appear across private museums and public outdoor sites, while other temporary works pop up along the beachfront during fair week. This year, there will be 287 exhibitors from around the world at the fair itself, including the four mega-galleries. Highlights include work by Olga de Amaral, at Lisson Gallery; and Gabriel Orozco, Haegue Yang, Leonor Antunes, and more at Kurimanzutto. —Elena Clavarino
