The German artists Anni and Josef Albers met nearly a century ago, in 1922, at the Bauhaus. Married in 1925, they maintained their own artistic practices—Anni focused on textiles, Josef on painting—and remained together until Josef’s death in 1976 (Anni lived until 1994). In the course of their lives, Anni and Josef became leading pioneers of 20th-century modernism. Exhibitions that focus on the artists as a couple, however, have been few and far between. A first in France, “Anni et Josef Albers: L’art et la vie” collects more than 350 works—from textiles and paintings to photographs, drawings, and furniture—and interweaves the lives of two Bauhaus greats. —J.V.
