Andy Warhol came of age in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and then made his way to New York without a penny to his name. He experimented with photography early on, snapping shots of strangers as well as acquaintances—a practice that became a catalyst for his silkscreens. Later, Warhol began to physically stitch together his prints, creating grids of 4, 6, and 12 repeated images—a suggestion of his diptychs. This exhibition features over 120 prints, some stitched, and some never before displayed. There are Polaroids of many friends—Debbie Harry, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dolly Parton, Grace Jones, Keith Haring—along with photo strips and gelatin silver prints. —E.C.
