“I want my portraits,” explains the American artist Amy Sherald, “to create a space where blackness can breathe.” Sherald creates social portraits from staged photographs, painting stylized figures against bold, vibrant backdrops. Though her subjects are often Black, she paints skin tones in gray scale, encouraging viewers to re-evaluate the complexities of race and representation. This exhibition takes its title from Anna Julia Cooper’s 1892 book, A Voice From the South by a Black Woman of the South. Sherald’s signature style invites all into the grand narrative of the American experience. —E.C.
