In the aftermath of 9/11, three friends—Johnny, Will, and Tunny—say goodbye to their hometown and set off for the city in search of new purpose. Life quickly intervenes. Tunny enlists in the army; Will returns home when his girlfriend tells him she’s pregnant; and Johnny, the story’s protagonist, spirals into a dangerous drug-fueled scene. Set to the electrifying guitars and drums that drive Green Day’s American Idiot, Billie Joe Armstrong’s 2009 rock opera returns. Directed by Snehal Desai in collaboration with the Death West Theatre, the production features both Deaf and hearing singers, with a performance in both American Sign Language and spoken English. —Jeanne Malle
