In 1975, David Mamet’s American Buffalo debuted at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. The play is set in a junk shop and revolves around a buffalo nickel that may be worth much more than it was sold for, hence the plan to steal it back. Coming off two Mamet hits earlier that decade—The Duck Variations and Sexual Peversity in Chicago—American Buffalo turned the playwright into a phenomenon. Forty-five years after its Broadway premiere, the play is back for its third Broadway revival, this time starring Laurence Fishburn, Sam Rockwell, and Darren Criss. —Jensen Davis
