Alex Katz got his start in 1950s New York, when Abstract Expressionism was all the rage. But unlike his peers, he wasn’t taken in by the new style. Katz wanted to do something different. He made hundreds of paintings, yet in a frenzy destroyed those he disliked. Now Katz is 95 and his brand of figurative portraits in brash colors is world renowned. Despite his success, he is still busy experimenting. This show focuses on the latest iterations of his ongoing series “Splits.” Over the last few years, Katz has been playing with Manet’s women in hats, creating portraits of ladies that are split down the middle. —Elena Clavarino
