Alberto Giacometti

“I paint and sculpt in order to get a grip on reality,” said the Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti. After W.W. II, that meant sculpting the elongated figures that are hauntingly his alone. But it was before W.W. I that Giacometti started working. At Národní galerie Praha, the Czech Republic’s first exhibition on Giacometti presents more than 100 sculptures and paintings from the 1920s through the 1960s, inviting viewers to explore the artist’s reckonings with a vastly changing reality. —J.V.
