“Brazil has a very good lesson to teach,” said the artist Adriana Varejão in 2016, “because here we have a mix of cultures; with Africa and the European culture.” Drawing from her country’s hybrid identity, Varejão attempts to “decolonize” her paintings and ceramic installations. Cutting, splitting, and fissuring are mainstay techniques of her practice. This exhibition sees seven rooms of the museum occupied by Varejão’s multidisciplinary works. Jarring sculptures and wall reliefs are pieced together out of terracotta tiles. All hold a hidden backstory of racism and violence. —Elena Clavarino
