Abstract is Not a Style: Five Women Painters

Nov 5 – Dec 12, 2020
303 Pequot Avenue, Southport, CT 06890, United States

“Abstract is not a style,” the artist Joan Mitchell once said, “I simply want to make a surface work. This is just a use of space and form; it’s an ambivalence of forms and space.” To illustrate Mitchell’s point, five women painters born in the 1970s and 80s—Cat Balco, Liz Leggett, Kylie Manning, Adrienne Elise Tarver, and Catherine Haggarty—are brought together in this group exhibition. Each has her own distinct approach to abstraction and its relationship with figuration, narration, and gesture. —E.C.
