A Streetcar Named Desire had its premiere on Broadway in December of 1947 and earned Tennessee Williams the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The plot is simple but full of secrets. Blanche DuBois, a haughty schoolteacher who’s lost her home, crashes at the apartment of her sister Stella, who’s married to Stanley, for an indefinite period of time. The New Orleans summer is sweltering and the apartment is too small. Blanche shows disdain for her sister’s marriage and taunts the working-class Stanley. But what is she herself running from? As the present and the past slowly collide, the mask begins to slip. In this production Anjana Vasan plays Stella and Paul Mescal (Normal People) is Stanley. Patsy Ferran took on the coveted role of Blanche a few days before opening, after Lydia Wilson had to withdraw from the production due to an injury. —Jensen Davis
