Not Too Tame, an English theater troupe intent on “breaking the boundaries of tame, polite theatre,” has turned Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into a raucous event. Directed by David Morrissey—who also stars as Oberon, the King of the Fairies in Shakespeare’s mystical, medieval universe—this version further exaggerates the story of waring fairy factions. As the artistic director Jimmy Fairhurst explains, “We want to see how dark we can go, like Nick Cave dark … and still maintain all the playfulness and celebration, that sense of fun, excitement and entertainment.” Audience members beware, everyone in the theater will be part of the “party.” —Jensen Davis
