The American singer Bobby Darin released 27 albums, starred in 13 movies, won two Grammys, and married Gidget—the adorable Hollywood ingénue Sandra Dee. And that was all before the age of 37, when he died while recovering from open-heart surgery, in 1973. Darin’s rise to fame and his whirlwind personal life are the subject of a new musical created and directed by Alex Timbers. Broadway sweetheart Jonathan Groff plays Darin, performing his own songs with a live band on a set designed to evoke the intimacy of a vintage nightclub. The cast includes Emily Bergl, Erika Henningsen, and Gracie Lawrence. —Jeanne Malle
