A King's Reign

Soon to enter his 21st season in the N.B.A., LeBron James has won a level of renown in the sports universe that can only be compared to Michael Jordan’s. Because of the M. J. comparisons and James’s proximity to the ever-looming title of “Greatest Ever,” it becomes difficult to analyze the King’s astonishing career on its own terms. In other words, his ever-accruing achievements are rarely given due assessment; instead, he’s measured always in comparison with another player, another record. Thankfully, The Athletic is releasing A King’s Reign, 12 podcast episodes that honor the incredible feats of “The Kid from Akron.” The series is hosted by Athletic editors, and features a revolving cast of LeBron’s friends, family, teammates, and coaches, who move from his years playing youth basketball to his early days on the Cavaliers, then to his tenure with the Heat, and beyond. Although A King’s Reign will conclude by mid–August, the LeBron show—luckily—is far from over. —Jack Sullivan
