On November 18, 2011, the Clyfford Still Museum opened with a retrospective survey. The exhibition started with figurative works that Still painted in the 1920s, a prelude to his move into abstraction. “I never wanted color to be color,” he said. “I never wanted texture to be texture, or images to become shapes. I wanted them all to fuse together into a living spirit.” By the late 1930s Still was an Abstract Expressionist—one of the first. Visionary and influential, he continued on this path until his death in 1980. For the museum’s 10th anniversary, that first exhibition returns. The career-spanning show, which stretches across nine galleries, also includes archival gems such as photographs of lost paintings, correspondences, and inventory records.
