Five decades before Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton had everyone singing about the founding fathers, playwright Peter Stone and lyricist Sherman Edwards created a musical based on a profound historical event: the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The show, which premiered on Broadway in 1969 and won three Tony Awards (among them Best Musical), focuses on the largely despised Massachusetts delegate, John Adams, and his efforts to bring the document before Congress. This is the second Broadway revival of 1776, and it’s spearheaded by directors Jeffrey Page and Diane Paulus. —Jensen Davis
