“The artists I invited,” says the curator Nicholas Bourriaud, explaining his theme for Istanbul’s 16th Biennial, “explore this territory where humans and non-humans, machines, waste, animal life and trees are colluding to produce new forms.” The title of Bourriaud’s biennial, “The Seventh Continent,” doesn’t refer to some undiscovered oasis, but to a man-made floating continent of slowly circling rubbish. Fifty-six artists, exhibiting across Pera Museum and Büyükuda Island, reflect on the realities of our new world, and together document “the landscape of Anthropocene.” —E.C.
